Vermont Ski Holidays

Vermont, situated in New England, is dominated by the Green Mountain Range, which runs through the entire length of the state. Vermont was the birthplace of skiing in the USA and is now home to 900 trails within its’ 21 ski resorts, which range in style quite drastically.

Although the mountains of Vermont can’t match the altitude, or the powder of its’ Western counterparts, the area is highly accessible attracting many visitors from Europe, and all over the country, especially East Coast city dwellers, due to its’ good selection of terrain, slopes and an average of 300 inches of snow per year.

Vermont is the most rural state in the US, and it still retains its’ image of being a quaint, yet quirky and socially aware place to live, where white spire churches, restored barns and farms abound.

The Mountains

The resorts of Vermont offer something for everyone. In northern Vermont, one of the states’ most popular ski area is Stowe, an easy going and unpretentious resort set in a quaint, classic New England village, with its’ Mount Mansfield reaching the highest peak in the state, 1300m, and being home to many black and double black diamond runs.

Smugglers Notch is a well-known family favourite, and Sugarbush is a hotspot for adventure skiers. The north-eastern resort of Jay Peak, close to the Canadian border, offers great back-country terrain, with excellent tree and powder skiing, and shows rural Vermont at its’ best. In central Vermont, Killington, the “Beast of the East”, dominates the region, with its’ vast ski area over seven mountains attracting the young, party-loving crowd, and claiming the longest season in Vermont due to its’ phenomenal snowmaking system.

In the southern part of Vermont are some great family resorts - Stratton, one of the pioneers in snowboarding, with its’ meticulously groomed trails, Bromley, with its’ sunny south facing slopes, and Mount Snow, with its’ 770 acres and 145 runs, and home to Ripcord, the steepest trail in Vermont.

The Apres-ski

Much of Vermonts’ apres-ski scene is low-key and modest, much like the state itself. In Stowe the village has very much a European feel, and is home to such bars as the Rusty Nail, and plenty of gourmet dining, like Maxwells’ at Topnotch. Killington has a raucous bustling bar scene, with The Wobbly Barn being a favourite, especially when local bands play there.

Stratton has an authentic Austrian feel, its’ pedestrian village busy with shops, bars and restaurants. Other activities to try throughout Vermont are ice-skating, winter hikes, sleigh rides and the plenty of shopping, from local artisan shops to outlet malls.

Killington Skiing Holidays

Killington, situated in the Green Mountain range in Vermont, is a sprawling ski resort, the largest in the Eastern United States, stretching over seven mountains with five base areas.

The resort is famous for the most extensive snow-making facilities in the east, 2,000 snow cannons ensuring good snow coverage over 99 km, and this, together with the fact that Killington ski resort receives an average of 250”of snow per year, makes for an exceptionally long season, spanning from October to May and sometimes June.

The Mountains

Killington has a base elevation of 325m – its’ 33 lifts taking skiers to the summit at 1293m, at a rate of over 50,000 passengers per hour. With six mountains connected and the seventh, Pico, just a ten minute bus ride away, skiers can choose from a diverse range of terrain, as Killington is home to 200 trails covering an area of 139km.

Killington has beginners’ slopes on every mountain, Snowdon and Pico being particularly good, with many of the easy greens situated at the top of many of them, enabling novices to enjoy the fabulous views. Skiers in Killington can then progress to Rams Head, with a good combination of greens and blues, and most of the mountains offer long cruising runs for intermediates. Killington Peak, the highest mountain, is home to many double black diamonds to test more advanced skiers, and Bear Mountain boasts the steepest mogul run in New England.

Snowboarders are well catered for in Killington with 3 half-pipes, 2 terrain parks and a boardercross course. Killington, being close to both Boston and New York, is a favourite with weekend skiers, meaning the slopes can get quite busy.

The Apres-ski

Killington has one of the liveliest apres-ski scenes on the East coast with the resort being very popular with young skiers. This is reflected in the bar scene, with famous haunts such as The Wobbly Barn and the Pickle Barrel being packed most nights, especially when they play host to up-and-coming bands.

Generally Killington is busy and bustling, with happy hours and dancing to be found all over the resort, as well as plenty of restaurants from the formal, requiring reservations, such as Hemingways, to family friendly places such as Caseys’ Caboose.

Off the slopes visitors can try ice-skating and indoor rock-climbing, trips to the spa and excursions to neighbouring picturesque Vermont villages.

Stowe Skiing Holidays

Stowe, near Burlington in northern Vermont, is one of the oldest and most distinguished ski resorts in the US, and offers perhaps the best skiing on the East Coast. The resort offers skiing on the highest mountain in Vermont, Mount Mansfield, and a wide selection of intermediate slopes, with some fantastic off-piste.

Stowe is a classic New England town, quaint and picturesque, with charming historic buildings including a white steepled church, and offers an attractive base to stay in.

There are plans to give Stowe a multi-million dollar facelift over the next 10 years, with major development of the entire resort in progress, incorporating the lifts, slopes, snowmaking and resort base facilities.

The Mountains

The skiing in Stowe is situated over 2 mountains, Mount Mansfield, at 1,339m, the highest in the state, and Spruce Peak, located on the other side of the valley. The 56 slopes are spread over 65km of terrain, served by 12 lifts, and the skiing is characterised by narrow winding trails through the woods.

Beginners start off on the gentler Spruce, where the ski school and the nursery slopes are located, and then progress to some nice scenic runs on the mountain. Intermediate skiers have the most terrain in Stowe, over 60% of the total amount, and will enjoy the tree-skiing and the unusually long runs, almost twice the length of the average East Coast trail. Stowe is home to some infamous challenging blacks which give the resort its’ excellent reputation, notably the Front Four trails – Goat, Starr, Liftline and National – long, steep, heavily mogulled runs, which are tough enough to test the most experienced skier.

The resort is also known for its’ fantastic off-piste skiing, and Stowe is a mecca for cross-country skiers with its’ access to 200km of trails. Snowboarders have 3 terrain parks to choose from, and a superpipe, and the resort also offers night-skiing.

The Apres-ski

Stowe dates back to the 18th century and the town is rich in history and character. The town is 15km from the resort, and offers an authentic quaint base to stay, with its’ typical New England inns and bed and breakfasts, as well as larger hotels, lodges and motels. There are plenty of bars to frequent after a hard days’ skiing, both off the slopes and in the town, with The Shed and The Rusty Nail being popular apres-ski venues. Stowe has a wide range of restaurants in the town, and plenty of shops for browsing.

Whilst skiing in Stowe, other activities to enjoy include snow-mobiling, ice-skating, sleigh-riding and swimming. A fun excursion from Stowe is visiting the Ben & Jerrys’ ice cream factory, which is a short distance from the resort.

Historical Tour of Laura Plantation

Enjoy a driving tour through the Sonoran Desert to the red rock country of Sedona where you will make a coffee break/picture stop at about 9:00am. Take a stroll through stunning Sedona, before you continue your sightseeing tour up a beautiful 17 mile scenic drive in Oak Creek Canyon. Travel up into the San Francisco Mountains surrounding the Flagstaff area and continue along sections of historic Route 66 through Williams and arrive at the Grand Canyon around lunch time.

Here, you will enjoy a helicopter flight which takes you over the deepest portion of the Grand Canyon, through Dragon Corridor and on to the North Rim for some breathtaking views. During your return flight, you will see rock temples and shrines while flying over the widest portion of the Colorado River.

After your flight, your guide will then provide a driving tour along a scenic 23 mile rim drive. Stops will be made at a couple of view points to learn about the Canyon from your guide. Court of Two Sisters History:
It was two Creole sisters and the notions shop they owned on this site that gave The Court of Two Sisters its name. However, 613 Rue Royale has long played a significant role in the history of the French Quarter and old New Orleans. The two sisters, Emma and Bertha Camors, born 1858 and 1860 respectively, belonged to a proud and aristocratic Creole family. Their "rabais", or notions, outfitted many of the city's finest women with formal gowns, lace and perfumes imported from Paris. Marriage, reversals of fortune, widowhood - nothing could separate the sisters. Indeed, as the Picayune was to report, the sisters died within two months of each other in the winter of 1944.
